Rheumatology is the branch of Medicine dealing with the study and treatment of illnesses of the locomotor system: bones, joints and muscles. It also includes illnesses which cause inflammation to the connective tissues and can affect various vital organs.
Rheumatic illnesses are the most frequent cause of disability in Spain and the second cause of sick leave after the flu. They include illnesses as frequent as gout, osteoporosis and arthrosis wherever it may occur: hands, knees, hips etc.
There are more serious and more aggressive illnesses such as chronic arthritis (rheumatoid and others) and connective tissue diseases. They can affect people of any age, from the elderly to small children (juvenile chronic arthritis), even when the patient was previously healthy. They can be acute or chronic and all can benefit from the appropriate treatment.
