This technique is indicated mainly in patients with Benign Obstructive Hyperplasia in its early stages who want to stop drug treatment
The Urology Service of Hospital Clínica Benidorm incorporates the Rezum technique, a minimally invasive treatment with water vapour, to the existing offer of treatments for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia. After drug treatment, this new technique is the least aggressive and manages to preserve ejaculation in more than 95% of cases.
The Rezum system uses radio frequency to generate “humid” thermal energy in the form of water vapour, which is injected in controlled doses into a specific area of the prostate tissue (in the transition area and / or middle lobe).
The steam, in contact with the hyperplastic tissue, liberates thermal energy that denatures the cell membranes and necrotizes it. There is therefore a proportionate reduction from the inside that allows the internal urinary tissues and sphincters not to be damaged, so that it does not affect sexual or urinary physiology.
The Head of the Urology Service at Hospital Clínica Benidorm, Dr. Jesús Betancourt, explained that “with this technique we give a fundamental turn to the lives of prostate patients because we can eliminate obstructive hyperplasia without affecting urination or ejaculation. It is a treatment so minimally invasive and safe that it does not alter any urinary or sexual function”.
Other treatments, although they solve the main problems, destroy the prostate and with it, the internal sphincter or bladder neck, which radically affects the sexual life of these patients.
Specifically, treatment with the Rezum technique is indicated for patients with Benign Obstructive Hyperplasia who do not want to continue with drug treatment; young patients; patients with a high risk of bleeding; and with high associated comorbidity. It must be taken into account that in Spain, more than 50% of the male population between 50 and 60 years of age suffer from prostate problems.
The benefits of the Rezum technique, as it is a minimally invasive surgical technique, are many. For example:
- Safe alternative to pharmacological treatment.
- Outpatient process.
- Intervention with local anaesthesia or sedation.
- Quick recovery and improvement of symptoms.
- Preserves ejaculation in more than 95% of patients.
- Does not alter sexual or urinary physiology.
- It does not cause sexual impotence or urinary incontinence.
The Urology and Male Sexual Health Service of Hospital Clínica Benidorm has the necessary equipment and technologies to address the study and treatment of benign prostate pathologies with different approaches including the Green Laser, as well as the approach to urological oncological surgeries both by laparoscopy as with open surgery.
To determine whether or not a patient is a candidate for this technique, or others depending on the phase and condition of their prostate, they must undergo a review with the specialist in Urology.
HCB Male Preventive check-up
To facilitate access to HCB’s Urology specialists and in its Prevention line, a complete urological check-up has been designed to help evaluate the male health status. The “Male Preventive check-up” consists of a UROLOGICAL ECOGRAPHY, PSA or prostate antigen, FLOWOMETRY and evaluation by the specialist on the same day.
The urological check-up has a cost of 200 euros and to carry it out it is necessary to have a prior appointment and indicate its name: “Male Preventive Check-up”. It is possible to do it at Hospital Clínica Benidorm and at HCB Calpe Internacional (in this centre, the delivery of results may vary and may be given by telephone).
These tests are the tools with which the specialist can assess the general state of health of the patient and delve into possible diseases related to men that, after a review like this, can be prevented or addressed early.
